ECO FLOWERS

We hand-select our flowers from the most sustainable available. We focus on local, Fair Trade and Organic cut flowers throughout the seasons.

Local Flowers

Locally-grown flowers are available year-round and are always our first priority as they help support the local economy and require less fossil fuels to transport. Local flowers are usually grown in the Niagara and southwestern regions of Ontario. They are usually grown with little to no pesticides through the use of Integrated Pest Management. Ontario's labour laws protect workers from human rights violations. Pick Ontario is a great resource to learn more about local flowers and plants. The Ontario Flower Growers Co-Operative is where we source the majority of our locally-grown and Fair Trade flowers and plants.

Locally-grown Organic flowers are the ideal choice. The summer of 2013 was our first season stocking "uber-local" Organic flowers grown within the City of Toronto.

Fair Trade Flowers

Our second priority is Fair Trade flowers, which usually come from South American countries such as Ecuador and Colombia, but may also come from Africa or the Middle East. The Fair Trade flowers we stock are usually certified by such organizations as VerifloraRainforest AllianceSierra Eco and Florverde. We try to only buy Veriflora certified flowers and leave Florverde as our last choice. Not all Fair Trade flowers are created equal. Some certification labels are more stringent than others. Fair Trade flowers are shipped a long distance, which requires more fossil fuels.

Organic flowers are usually our last priority because they come a long way - just as far or farther then Fair Trade flowers. Organic certification also does not necessarily protect workers' rights. For example, Veriflora would be a better choice because of their requirement that each of their certified Fair Trade farms have a plan to go Organic. Organic flowers are usually USDA Certified Organic and come from California, South America, or Australia.
